Programs & Services

JustREAD works in partnership with local schools and other entities to help middle and high school students who are struggling with reading and writing and are at risk of dropping out. Most of our students are American-born; some have been in a gang, used drugs, or in Juvenile Hall. Our goal is to help them increase their reading level, pass the California Exit Exam, graduate and, hopefully, go on to college.

Given our program's proven success, the Mountain View High School administration created an elective spot in student schedules for JustREAD tutoring. Students now attend five tutoring sessions a week and receive credit toward graduation.

The combination of JustREAD's specially designed curriculum, individualized lesson plans and the one-on-one personal attention of our caring tutors is what makes our students succeed.

Program Specifics:

JustREAD teaches the building blocks of reading and writing, listening and speaking, through one-on-one tutoring by specially trained volunteers.

Teachers, counselors, administrators and parents refer students to JustREAD. Criteria for acceptance includes one or more of the following: The student is reading below grade level, received low STAR test scores, failed the English portion of the California Exit Exam, transitioned from an English Language Learner program, has credit deficiencies due to failing grades or is at risk of dropping out of school.

Tests are administered to determine each new student's reading level. Then an individualized tutoring plan (Focus Plan) is developed, and the student is matched with an appropriate tutor. Each student is given pre- and post-assessment tests at the beginning and end of each semester to help monitor progress.

Although there are other tutoring programs available in our community, JustREAD's program is unique because its specially designed phonics-based curriculum provides the flexibility to customize lesson plans for each student, regardless of his or her current grade level of reading. No other program offers this type of individualized approach and curriculum for teenagers.

JustREAD's caring volunteer tutors are vital to the success and cost-effectiveness of our program. Tutor training includes a 2-hour orientation as well as individual sessions for our curriculum, including the Basic Toolbox (with flash cards) and textbooks (Word-for-Word, JustWrite, Bare Bones Grammar). New tutors shadow an experienced tutor before we partner them with a student.

JustREAD takes the fear out of reading and writing. We believe that reading success holds the promise for struggling students to become motivated, employable citizens and lifelong learners.

"As a tutor for the JustREAD program in the Mountain View/Los Altos High School District and also as a Trustee for the same district's Board of Education, I have seen firsthand the incredible value this program brings to the students of our district."

Susan Sweeley, Trustee, MV/LA High School District Board of Education.
